8.8.2008 - A Day for Burma, not China

8.8.1988, 20 years ago, in 1988, the people of Burma rose up against the regime. Students and monks, workers and intellectuals, members of all ethnic groups went through the streets of Rangoon and other towns to protest against the increasing misgovernance by the military regime that had seized power in 1962. The army responded with a massacre. Several thousand of peaceful protesters were shot and beaten to death, and injured people, together with dead corpses, were thrown on army trucks and carried away to unknown places. Read more...

The Recommendations of the 11th FBE (7-8 June 2008, Helsinki)

At the 11th FBE, we reaffirmed our commitment for peace, social justice, human rights and democracy for our homeland.  On the same occasion, the following recommendations were made.

1) The continued detention of Burmese opposition leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and other key dissidents has effectively left the Burmese opposition movement rudderless.  Therefore the soonest release of key dissidents and all other political prisoners in Burma must be a continued priority in any call for the improvement of human rights situations in Burma.
